South Africa Mining Output Falls More than Expected
Mining production in South Africa dropped 2.9 percent year-on-year in October 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.6 percent fall in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a 1.8 percent decline. The largest downward contributions came from production of copper (-41.4 percent); diamonds (-39.9 percent); manganese (-12.5 percent); PGM’s (-4.8 percent); chromium (-2 percent); coal (-1.5 percent); and gold (-1.2 percent). On the other hand, positive contributors were iron ore (11.1 percent); and nickel (1.5 percent). On a monthly basis, mining production rose 1 percent, slowing from a 1.1 percent gain in the prior month.

South Africa Mining Production Unexpectedly Rises
Mining production in South Africa edged up 0.2 percent year-on-year in September of 2019, following a downwardly revised 3 percent drop in August and beating market expectations of a 2.2 percent decline. The largest positive contributions came from production of iron ore (8.2 percent); other non-metallic minerals (13.6 percent); and other metallic minerals (38 percent). In contrast, the largest downward contributors were diamonds (-15.7 percent); manganese ore (-7.3 percent); and PGMs (-2 percent). On a monthly basis, mining output went up 1.5 percent, rebounding from a flat reading in August. Considering the three months to September, mining production declined 1.6 percent over the previous period, after rising 4.1 percent in the second quarter of the year.

South Africa Mining Output Unexpectedly Falls in August
Mining production in South Africa shrank 3.2 percent from a year ago in August 2019, following a downwardly revised 1.4 percent rise in July and against market estimates of a 1.9 percent gain. Output declined for PGMs (-12.5 percent vs 2.9 percent); diamonds (-29.8 percent vs -35.6 percent); coal (-3.4 percent vs 8.7 percent); gold (-5.4 percent vs -13.4 percent); iron ore (-7.8 percent vs 9.6 percent) and building materials (-3.5 percent vs 0.3 percent). In addition, production rose less for nickel (0.4 percent vs 18.9 percent); other metallic minerals (35.4 percent vs 56.9 percent). Meanwhile, higher output was recorded for copper (176.5 percent vs -23.8 percent); manganese ore (34.3 percent vs 16.9 percent); other non-metallic minerals (10.9 percent vs 4.5 percent) and chromium ore (0.7 percent vs -8.6 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, mining production went up 0.3 percent, recovering slightly from an upwardly revised 4.9 percent slump in the prior month.

South Africa Mining Output Rises the Most in Over a Year
Mining production in South Africa rose 2.4 percent from a year ago in July 2019, following a downwardly revised 4.1 percent fall in June and below market forecasts of a 4.2 percent increase. It was the largest gain in mining output since June last year, as production rebounded for coal (8.6 percent vs -1.3 percent in June); PGMs (2.7 percent vs -6.3 percent); iron ore (-23.7 percent vs -1.9 percent); building materials (0.6 percent vs -1.9 percent) and nickel (18.9 percent vs -13.1 percent). Additionally, other metallic minerals output advanced further (46.3 percent vs 43.4 percent). Also, production dropped less for gold (-13.1 percent vs -16 percent); chromium ore (-5.7 percent vs -3.8 percent) and copper (-23.8 percent vs -40.6 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, mining output went down 3.8 percent, after a downwardly revised 3 percent gain in the prior month.

South Africa Mining Output Falls the Most in 4 Months
Mining production in South Africa shrank 4.2 percent from a year ago in June 2019, following a 1.5 percent decrease in the prior month and beating market expectations of a 2.1 percent fall. Output decreased for the eighth consecutive month and the most since February. The largest negative contributors were: gold (-16 percent); diamonds (-33.2 percent) and PGMs (-6.3 percent). In contrast, gains were recorded for manganese ore (24.6 percent); other metallic minerals (43.3 percent) and other non-metallic minerals (14.8 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, mining production rose 3.3 percent, after an upwardly revised 3.1 percent in the previous month.

South Africa Mining Output Contracts for 7th Month
Mining production in South Africa shrank 1.5 percent from a year earlier in May 2019, the seventh consecutive month of decline and compared to market forecasts of a 2.5 percent slump. The largest negative contributors were: gold (-24.4 percent), diamonds (-30.7 percent), iron ore (-5.2 percent), and other metallic minerals (-9.8 percent). On the other hand, output growth was recorded for coal (8 percent), PGMs (6.8 percent), and manganese ore (29.3 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, mining output increased by 3 percent, reversing a 1.8 percent fall in April.
