Australia Retail Sales Unchanged in October
Retail sales in Australia were flat in October 2019, following a 0.2 percent rise in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent gain. Declines in clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-0.8 percent), department stores (-0.8 percent) and household goods (-0.2 percent) were offset by gains in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.4 percent) and food retailing (0.1 percent). Meantime, other retailing was relatively unchanged.

Australia Retail Sales Rise Less than Estimated
Retail sales in Australia advanced 0.2 percent month-over-month in September 2019, slowing from a 0.4 percent gain in August and missing market expectations of a 0.5 percent rise. Sales of food retailing rose at a softer rate (0.1 percent vs 0.3 percent in August), and sales dropped for clothing, footwear and personal retailing accessory (-0.5 percent vs 1.9 percent), and department stores (-0.2 percent vs 1.2 percent). Also, sales of household goods retailing were unchanged, following a 0.4 percent gain in the previous month. Meanwhile, sales of other retailing increased further (0.8 percent vs 0.3 percent), and those of cafes, restaurants and takeaway foods rebounded (0.6 percent vs -0.4 percent). On a quarterly basis, retail sales slipped 0.1 percent in the third quarter, compared to a 0.1 percent growth in the June quarter.

Australia Retail Sales Growth at 6-Month High
Retail sales in Australia advanced 0.4 percent month-over-month in August 2019, after being unchanged in the previous month and compared to market expectations of 0.5 percent growth. This was the fastest monthly rise in retail trade since February, following recent interest rate cuts from the RBA and government tax rebates. Sales grew for food retailing (0.4 percent, the same pace as in July), household goods retailing (0.3 percent vs 0.2 percent), clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (1.8 percent vs -0.9 percent), department stores (1.1 percent vs -0.2 percent), and other retailing (0.3 percent vs -0.4 percent). The rises were partly offset by a fall in cafes, restaurants and takeaway services (-0.3 percent vs -0.6 percent).

Australia Retail Sales Fall Unexpectedly in July
Retail sales in Australia declined by 0.1 percent month-over-month in July 2019, after a 0.4 percent gain in June and missing market forecasts of a 0.2 percent increase. It was the first monthly decrease in retail trade since April, as sales dropped in clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-1 percent from 1.7 percent in June); cafes, restaurants and takeaway food (-0.6 percent from 0.4 percent); and other retailing (-0.4 percent from 0.7 percent). Also, sales in household goods retailing went up 0.1 percent, easing from a 0.3 percent rise in the previous month. On the other hand, sales in food retailing advanced further (0.3 percent from 0.2 percent) and in department stores fell less (-0.2 percent from -0.7 percent).

Australia Retail Sales Growth Beats Forecast
Retail sales in Australia increased by 0.4 percent month-over-month in June 2019, accelerating from a 0.1 percent rise in the previous month and beating market expectations of 0.3 percent. This was the strongest monthly growth in retail trade since February, boosted by central bank rate cuts, tentative signs of a turnaround in housing market and government tax rebates to households. There were rises in five of the six industries: clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (2.0 percent vs 0.2 percent in May); other retailing (0.6 percent vs 0.5 percent); cafes, restaurants and takeaway services (0.5 percent, the same as in May); food retailing (0.1 percent vs -0.3 percent); and household goods retailing (0.2 percent vs 0.4 percent). In contrast, sales at department stores continued to fall (-0.6 percent vs -0.2 percent).

Retail trade in Australia increased by 0.1 percent month-over-month in May 2019, following a 0.1 percent fall in the previous month but below market expectations of 0.2 percent gain. Sales of both household goods retailing (0.5 percent vs -0.9 percent in April) and cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.7 percent vs -0.7 percent) rebounded and those of clothing, footwear and personal accessory fell at a softer pace (-0.2 percent vs -1.2 percent). On the other hand, sales of other retailing slowed (0.6 percent vs 0.8 percent) and sales dropped in food retailing (-0.3 percent vs 0.1 percent); and department stores (-0.4 percent vs 1.7 percent).
